What is the longest word that can cycle in the following fashion:

tea eat ate

(the first letter becomes the last and a new word is formed).

I know it won't by very high (and possibly 3 or 4 is the tops) just wondered on your thoughts...

- Lao

There are a few 4-letter examples, such as LAME and IDOL (whose cycles, iirc, are all in the uUnabridged Mirriam-Webster), and I believe the 5 cycles of ESTER are all in the OED. ANGOR and ERISH can also be argued as examples, depending on how far afield one is willing to go in admitting words (both use some proper names). Don't know of any 6-letter examples in English, though there may very well be one.
