Hi,

I'm after a type of printed puzzle where pictures are used to give you a phrase/word. I'm not referring to the dingbat type puzzles, but where you might have a picture of a dog with the letter D crossed out and some indication to use a G instead and there would be a few pictures used to make up the phrase/word.

Ideally someone will have a link for me, but their common name would be appreciated.

They might be called a rebus. Do a google image search for some examples to see if that's what you mean.

Google certainly seems to think they're rebus - cheers.

(rebuses - a rebu is a humpless zebu)

I thought I remembered there was a kind of reverse rebus called something like 'anarebus' but it gets no Google hits (except as the name of an Italian village). Maybe I'm thinking of a different puzzle. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

You're not serious about this, are you? REBU doesn't appear in TWL98, the official word list for North American Scrabble.

They are called rebuses. Very popular in Victorian times.

A Dingbat is, in fact, a type of rebus, as are today's text messaging abbreviations e.g. I 8 U, CU.
