Aligns is an anagram of signal. None of the letters in each word are in the same spot. Two questions - is there a name for this type of anagram and what is the longest word pair which will fit this description? Thanks in advance.
aslam PS: If there is a website which describes this, please post. Politely.

mathematically, at least, it's called a derangement of the letters. Not sure I've seen it in a wordplay context before - nice idea.
'Trivial' anagrams like decommission/commissioned should be a good place to look for the longest one.

'Making the Alphabet Dance' (Eckler) gives examples of all the 6!-1 possible permutations of a six-letter word, forming a new word in each case, but has nothing specifically about derangements.
However, it does give the longest known 'non-trivial' anagrams, and, of these, CINEMATOGRAPHER-MEGACHIROPTERAN is a derangement (if I've checked

A few times ago, when I was doing maths at school, my maths teacher used the word 'dérangement' (I'm French) which looks like Martin's word 'derangement', isn't it?
Sincerely, Phytozoaire I.

Maybe they SHOULD be called, if not something else already, 'Deranagrams'... (snicker..)
Thanks, Leroy Quet
