What simple technique can be used to determine if a mirror is a regular one or two-way?

Shine a light at it. If it goes through, it's two way. Otherwise, it's regular.

I guess that I should have checked with snopes or your link before I posted this, I had heard on the radio about using the fingernail reflection technique which was confirmed by someone else who called in but apparently this doesn't always work. Turning off the lights would work unless it's totally dark in the next room. Snopes also mentions rapping on the mirror to listen for audible clues. Thanks for the link.

Doesn't necessarily work. If it's dark behind the mirror, all this does is leave you in the dark.

The easiest way to do it, assuming a lighted room, is to cup your hands around your eyes and press your face against the mirror. The room on the back side of the mirror is lit by the rest of the room, and since your eyes are shaded by your hands, you can see into the room. If all you see is darkness, it's probably a regular mirror.

Go to the other side?

Walk up and peer into it?
