Is a contestant allowed to bet $0 on a Daily Double, as he is in Final Jeopardy?

No. On a daily double the minimum bet is $5

I forget where. Most likely on some program it was mentioned- I think someone bet $5 on a daily double, and Alex Trebek made a comment like 'the minimum

Some one actually did try to bet nothing and Alex informed the contestant about the minimum.

That's unfortunate.
If the daily double turns up as the last remaining clue in Double Jeopardy, and if the leader has exactly twice as much money as his nearest opponent, he would want to bet $0 on both the daily double and the subsequent Final Jeopardy, in order to ensure himself a tie. A tie is as good as a win, since then both co-champions return the next day.

I don't think that's how the rules work. Unless they've changed the rules in the last couple of years, it works as follows:
if both end up at the same score after final jeopardy, the one who had the higher score going in wins. If they both have the same score -before- final jeopardy and both share the same high score after double jeopardy, then they get to return as co-champions.

Bill Smythe:
I agree with this, although not with this:
*And* they both keep the cash from that day.
But if you're the only winner, you will next play two first-time players. That's probably easier, on average, than going up against someone who's survived one or more games.
Julie Waters:
I think Julie is just misremembering. Perhaps that's the rule for the second-place prize. As to the win, the score after Final Jeopardy! is everything, unless they've changed the rules since the last time I saw co-champions.
As long as we're talking about Jeopardy! rules, here's one I don't know. If there's a tie for last place after the first (Jeopardy!) round, then who gets to pick first in Double Jeopardy!? Anyone know?

No, your rule is correct - except in tournaments. I *think* Julie's version is correct in that case (except for the end of a 2-game final, where I think whoever had the higher day 1 total is the winner). I seem to recall a tie for one of the 'wild card' positions in a tournament, and they asked both of them an answer (now there's a strange statement), and whoever gave the correct question advanced in the tournament.

I think I've seen this. The person standing at the leftmost (from the viewer's standpoint) podium gets the nod. (I'm not absolutely sure about this, though.)

* When a contestant has no cash left after Double Jeopardy, he or she cannot hang around for Final Jeopardy.
What happens if two contestants have no cash? Do they continue with Final Jeopardy with only one contestant?
Has this ever happened?
