Signups for the Dave123 Second Annual Puzzle Competition (+a couple of puzzles)

Hi guys, I've decided to definately run a second puzzle competition. For those of you who may be interested but missed my first one they work like this:

1) You sign up. You can either post & tell me in this thread or you

confirming your admission to the competition. However, please note that if you choose not to e-mail me, you should ensure that the e-mail address in your header is still valid 'cos that's where the puzzles will be sent.

2) Once I've got 20 people (a random, but neat amount) the competition will begin. The first round will be sent out by e-mail and you will have exactly seven days to send me your answers back. Shortly after the deadline, the second round will be sent out.

3) The competition will consist of four rounds. As I have been feeling particularly creative lately each round will have 7 puzzles in it. The puzzles will span a range of categories but the format will be pretty uniform, thusly:

In each round there will be one:

Lateral Thinking puzzle Wordplay puzzle Logic puzzle Maths puzzle Cipher puzzle Sequence puzzle

and one miscellaneous puzzle.

4) Each question will be worth 5 points. The winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the four rounds. There is a bonus point available for any player who solves 5 or more of the puzzles in any one round.

5) After the deadline of each round, the puzzles will be posted in this very forum for everybody elses solving pleasure.

The following is a synonym chain. The pair of words below can be linked by four other words. Each word must be synonymous with the word(s) beside it, even if they are in different contexts. Supply the missing words.

The original post in this thread was made by me, dave123. Unfortunately I share this computer with several other faculty members who are also ardent puzzlers and I forgot to log out. While I'm here I might as well say that the list of puzzlers for the competition has grown to 7.

Also, if you're trying the sample puzzles in the above post, for the lateral thinking puzzle I forgot to state that the bed linen sheets were all plain, single coloured sheets.

When do you plan to start the contest? The reason I ask is I will be without net access for a few days next week (away to foreign climes on business) and wouldnt want to miss out....

Okay, I've had no more signups they are closed at 17. Slightly lower than I had hoped for but C'est la vie. Within the next 2 or 3 days all of the competitors will get an e-mail explaining the rules of the competition and the day after that they will get the first round of
