How many types of puzzles are there?

That depends on what you consider a 'type'

For instance, you might consider all 'story' problems one type, while another considers Riddles different from 'Aha!'s, and both different from 'Brute Force' questions. (definitions of types here deliberately left ambiguous)

logic puzzles math puzzles lateral-thinking puzzles (aka situation puzzles) crossword puzzles jigsaw puzzles word puzzles riddles word equations (ex. 26=L o t A) mechanical puzzles (Rubik's cube, sliding tiles, etc.) others I can't think of.
