If scramble means re-arrange, then in either case M and L would have to be present in the five-letter word. On going through a thesaurus for 'ship', I can't come across any such entry.

Very good !!!

I believe it might have been one of those lateral thinking puzzles. Though, the thing about alternative task means there should another solution.
