This may not be a puzzle, per se, so if it's off topic, please point me to a better group.
I've seen crossword puzzles using 'ess' to describe a curve shape, or the spelling of the letter 's.' So far, I've found this:
a - b - bee c - cee d - dee e - f - eff g - gee h - aitch i - j - jay k - kay l - ell m - em n - en o - p - pee q - cue r - ar s - ess t - tee u - v - vee w - double u x - ex y - wye z - zee
I couldn't find any 'spellings' for the five major vowels. Are there any? Why not? Or, perhaps, why do we have spellings for the others? Why is the '-ee' spelling/sound so strongly represented (8/26 letters)?
I'm not talking about 'eye' sounding like 'I,' but instead the fact that 'eye' does not have as a definition 'the letter i.'

Could it be that, in English at least, a spellable syllable must contain a vowel? Or do I mean a speakable syllable? In any case, I can pronounce 'a', but I can't pronounce 'h' without sounding wheezy

I saw once a Sidney Harris cartoon of the alphabet (in alphabetical order), where of course the ordering was on the spelled-out names of the letters. He had all 26. I don't remember the exact spellings he used, but I think it differed from yours e.g. in using 'see' instead of 'cee'.
