Hamburgers around here range from $0.50 to $5.00, McDonalds special to hamburger joint. They weigh, I'd guess less than a 1/2 pound. That makes them cost $1/lb to $10/lb. A Mazda Miata weighs about 2400 lbs. The car costs $24000, for $10/lb for the car. The Mazda 626 is $20000 and 3000lbs =~ $6/lb. The Ford Excursion is $40000 and 7000lbs. I think the statement is not accurate.

If by myth, you mean not true, he doesn't say that. He doesn't deny it. In fact he says some experts say what Allison said. He gives two other choices.

Allison, don't let 'em pick on you too much.

If they weighed a full half pound.

Maybe not all the time....

Don't they advertize them as quarter pounders? (Except in Europe, where a 'Quarter Pounder with Cheese' becomes a 'Royale with Cheese.' I would bet they weigh a bit less than a full half pound. -JMP

In the McD's and BK TV ads, there's always real small print saying 'pre-cooked weight.'

CW

PS: If you keep kosher, then you know that cars can cost less per pound than a restaurant hamburger!

I assumed that the weight of the hamburger was the entire sandwich, and not just the meat patty. (OP: 'hamburgers cost more than new cars' and not 'hamburger costs....' Most sandwiches have at least a bun. Many come with lettuce, tomato, and condiments. Others have bacon, cheese, egg, peanut butter, avacado, onions, mushrooms, .... You get my drift. Besides, this was back-of-the-envelope and I don't think that arguing 1/2 pound versus 6.8665 ounces is reasonable. The statement seemed odd enough that I wanted to check it out

Actually my objection arose mostly because you yourself said they weigh, you'd guess, less than a 1/2 pound.
