For those who missed the beginning, this contest was run by a Canadian newspaper, and the rules and 'questions' can currently still be found under <http://www.nationalpost.com/features/inheritance/>.

Here are all the answers and some comments based on a combination of my own reasoning and information posted to this newsgroup earlier.

DAY 1 1. match (What should the man light first?) 2. their ('there' tendency) 3. American (song, 'America' Pie) 4. 60 (Babe Ruth's home runs) 5. deserts ('desserts' of Arabia) 6. Caracas (capital of Venezuela) 7. Ben (TV series, Gentle 'Bob' 8. 2 (number of factors a prime number has) [in natural numbers] 9. number (Spanish word numero) 10. better (the 'bettor' of two fine wines) 11. had (song, If I 'Owed' $1,000,000) 12. 2001 (movie, '2000': A Space Odyssey)

DAY 2 1. arm (French word bras) 2. 80 (book, Around the World in '60' Days) 3. white (What colour is the bear?) [Hah! See in rec.puzzles archive.] 4. crocheting ('crosheting' 5. 9 (zeros in a billion) 6. Rowling (author of Harry Potter books)

[Not an error: 'late spring of 1922, nearly four years after the Great War had ended'. November 1918 to June 1922 is considered 'nearly' 4 years.]

7. 8 (legs on a spider) 8. nephew ('neice' [the fact that 'niece' is also misspelled doesn't matter] 9. to (I want 'too' come, too) 10. gone ('gonne' 11. complementary ('complimentary' colour)

[Not an error: blue as complementary color of orange. There are different ways to define complementary colors.]

12. confidence (an individual also needs 'confidents'

DAY 3 1. its ('it's' way of expressing itself) 2. 15 (school days in a week X singers in a trio) 3. slower (relativity: speed of aging vs. speed of movement)

[Not considered an error: water going down a drain swirling counter-clockwise due to Coriolis Effect in Australia. Doubly wrong; Coriolis does not appreciably affect things as small as drains, and if it did, in Australia the swirl would be clockwise.]

4. Coriolis ('Coriolanus' effect) 5. Beatles (the 'Beetles' 6. thou ('thow' winter wind)

[Not an error: lyrics quoted from The Loneliest Number. There have been different versions]

7. 1 (The Loneliest Number) 8. Sherpa ('Shirpa' 9. as (as good 'is' gold) 10. beetle (a brown 'beatle' 11. her ('His' [Evie's] eyebrow...) 12. 54 (squares on Rubik's cube)

DAY 4 1. 40 (40 days and '30' nights of Noah's flood) 2. blue (Elvis Presley's suede shoes) 3. chamois ('shamois' 4. left (French word gauche) 5. 2 (points for a safety) 6. 10 (12 is '11' points too many) 7. parallel ('parralel' 8. 12 (2-cent stamps in a dozen) 9. worst (golfer with highest score) 10. War (radio show, 'Wars' of the Worlds) 11. nitpicking ('knitpicking' 12. 12 (9+0+2+1+0)

DAY 5 1. whoever ('Whoevery' 2. Juliet (As 'Romeo' says...)

[Not an error: by any other name would smell as sweet. Varies from one to another edition of the play.]

3. left (French word gauche, again) 4. 4 (NHL teams Wayne Gretzky played for) 5. he (lately 'she' [Jason] had been acting weird) 6. mother (surgeon puzzle) 7. 79 ('89' years earlier, 2001 to 1922) 8. 11 (2-digit prime with identical digits) 9. horse (mule's parents: a donkey and a 'cow' 10. 5280 (feet in a mile) 11. capital ('capitol' of the United States) 12. Capitol ('Capital' Building)

DAY 6 1. might (how outlandish the claim 'mite' sound) 2. Austrian ('Hungarian' city of Vienna) 3. Schubert (composer Franz 'Shubert' 4. blind (Homer, who according to legend was 'deaf' 5. millennium ('millenium' 6. Paige (pitcher Satchel 'Page' 7. to (happened 'two' us) 8. 8 (other planents in solar system) [as known in 2001, not 1922] 9. east (wind that blows smoke into setting sun) 10. 5 (books in Torah) 11. thousand (years from 1922 to 922) 12. salt (NaCl)

DAY 7 1. Hamlet (The play's the thing) 2. May (05/23/87 is 'April' 23, 1987) 3. Love (Gottlieb is German for God's 'Leaf' 4. Springfield ('Springsteen', town in TV show The Simpsons) 5. until ('untill' 6. his (A man has to keep 'her' wit sharp) 7. Bad (movie, The Good, the 'Mad' and the Ugly) 8. 9 (sum of digits of a multiple of 9)

9. east (wind that blows smoke into setting sun) 10. 5 (books in Torah) 11. thousand (years from 1922 to 922) 12. salt (NaCl)

Good job Mark,

I as well am in the draw and discovered all of the same 'not-an-error' errors that you did. I found that made it even more of a challenge.

Is it just me, or did you feel that for a gentleman that prided himself on his command of the English language adn who was a stickler for accuracy, that his writing skills and grammar were fairly mediocre and that this storyline could've been a heckuva lot more interesting and better written?

I personally thought that when corrected errors rendered the context meaningless or even incorrect, that it detracted from the whole affair?

just my 2 cents

Chris Wise

Actually, the first one was the Latin word Sinister. Was this who wants to be Mark Brader's heir?

What do I win?
