Without the use of any reference, try to guess the largest US city with a one-syllable name (according to the 2000 census).

I may have made an error scanning the city-list for one-syllable names (so I may have consequently missed a city), but the solution I got wasn't too obvious.

Thanks, Leroy Quet

PS: Okay. If you must, and after thinking about this for a long time you still cannot think of the answer, then you may look at a reference. Or you can look at the reference to check your solution (and mine)....

But I should note that #64

If we're going by local pronunciation, how about 'Nyawk'?

A new related puzzle:

Which country is it, when the largest city with a 1-syllable name in relation to the country's other cities is considered, that city's population-rank among the country's cities is the lowest value in the world?

Which country is it, when the largest city with a 1-syllable name in relation to the country's other cities is considered, that city's population-rank among the country's cities is the highest value in the world?

Of course, there is some issues with local names vs., say, the American names for the cities, as well as local pronunctiations vs other pronunctiations. And there are issues with the accuracy and up-to-date-ness of the censuses, and issues with whether we are talking about metro-areas or city-propers.

But I am only giving a starting point for the replies.

Thanks, Leroy Quet

Of course, if the largest city in a country has only one syllable, then that country ties, at least, in having the 1-syllable city with the lowest ranking. (Lower ranking = bigger city) Off hand, I can think of Rome. But this is only one syllable if we call the city by the name given it here in America, instead of how it's known locally (Roma).
