How do you brute force this in Excel? Do you program a macro or use the solver?
[Very long-winded (but cunning) explanantion snipped] :^)
It is.

In this case excl = excluding
I could probably find some way to do it on excel - but I would not bother, it would take all the fun away. I was spurred on to do this one by hand by Mark Tilfords excellent solution to last weeks ( ko ok).
Bearing in mind the number of coders and programmers in this group (of which I am not one) a better problem for them would not be to answer the New Scientist Enigma but to provide the most elegent and aesthetically pleasing code that can solve it.

Ahh. I should have twigged at the unusual spelling. Sorry.
FYI, the next 4 Enigmas look to me like they do not lend themselves to programmed solutions. Even though I do enjoy the challenge of programming a solution I find I get way more satisfaction from nutting out the solutions by hand (as is probably the composer's intention).
