Naturally. If it was 'old' money the amounts should be stated as 50d and 20d, not 50p and 20p.

A pre-decimal interpretation would be legitimate if they had printed '50 pence', but '50p' would not at any time have been considered as a valid way to designate 4s/2d.

While we are at assumptions, I seem to notice that everyone has assumed that all systems were positional. Early ones were not. Babylonians used just one symbol for their numbers; the order of magnitude was implied in context. Romans use different characters for different place values - I, X, C, M, ... instead of 1, 10, 100, 1000. Also, the invention of a '0' is somewhat new.

Television was invented in the 1920s (a mechanical system), I think there was a TV service in the UK before WW2 (1930s).
