Tim,

Here are all the words that can be made, at least based on the dictionary that I have. Maybe that will help you wind your way through....

I always thought of 3 in Three (which was great) as the sequel to Fool's Errand (which was the original, but a lot less colorful, musical, etc.)

Perusing the site, it looks like there's some way to download the original 3 in Three, plus a couple other games and then play them on some sort of an emulator... 'Executor?'

Has he made any games that play natively under Windows?

Nice work! This list may be a setback to my 'Boggle' approach. There aren't a lot of common words to draw from in constructing a clear sentence. 'or else' can be boggled out if wrapping around the edges is permitted, but that has the shaded 'R' on the inside.

I suppose it's possible we're just looking at a screenshot from the game, and one can only solve the enigma interactively, by purchasing the actual game.

But the Cliff Johnson I know is too clever and playful to just slap something unsolvable up there! Grrr...

I used to get The Fool's Gold by email, but only until issue #9 - #10 and #11 don't seem to be in my email archives, although they are posted on the site.

Issue #8 has a link to the following picture: http://www.fools-errand.com/00-cliff-johnson/ newsletters/008/kingdom-... This is almost (but not quite) like the background to the picture you mention. Could teh differences be significant, or are they there because teh picture's bene adjusted to make a space for the grid? (But why change the fool?)

Cheers

My suspicion is that it's merely representative of one of the game puzzles. If you did Cliff's April Fool Treasure Hunt this year, then you'd have seen these sort of squares used in that - but there was a grid to go with them in that. Mind you, having stumbled across this one, I then immediately started hunting across the site for others (as you tend to do, after doing the Treasure Hunt puzzle...

(note: I see that the shipping date has slipped *again* - and the wordsquare has now gone, to be replaced by what looks like it's going to be some sort of tangram puzzle.)
