Here are the top 25 countries in the world, in order, according to a certain criterion. (All data taken from the CIA World Factbook.)

You can guess the question: what criterion?

1. China 2. Russia 3. Brazil 4. India 5. United States 6. Kazakhstan 7. Democratic Republic of the Congo 8. Argentina 9. Canada 10. Mongolia 11. Sudan 12. Mali 13. Pakistan 14. Bolivia 15. Algeria 16. Uzbekistan 17. Chile 18. Colombia 19. Chad 20. Burma 21. Niger 22. Zambia 23. Peru 24. Afghanistan 25. Republic of the Congo

smallerish as you go down the list), but Australia, Greenland, Mexico, KSA, Indonesia, Libya and Iran are conspicuous by their absence.

I'd guess that it's also not the sort of statistic that snobbish Europeans of a sort would use to try to bash the United States; otherwise, Canada wouldn't be on such a list.

I've put my guess after the list on the off chance that I'm right...

Total length of borders with other countries?

Given that Portugal's border with Spain is 23% longer than Spain's border with Portugal, it would be interesting to see the actual figures.

Is that because maps of Portugal are at a different scale than maps of Spain?

Nick Wedd and Michael Mendelsohn write:

I didn't keep them after generating the list, but you know where to find them.

The CIAWF gives the 1,214 km figure for this border under both countries, neither of which made my list of 25 anyway.

That's what I'm referring to.

Does this mean they're using a single map of teh world for all measurements?

ObPuzzle: For what kind of country is the length of the border not affected (much) by fractality (fractionism? fratalism? fractidiousness?)?

Cheers
