Hi all, here are four questions I've thought of centered about US States:

1) Create a list of US State names so that no two names on the list share a common letter. Let 'A' be sum of the lengths of the state names used. What is the maximum value possible for 'A'?

2) Choose two of the lower 48 contiguous states. On a map, draw a straight line connecting the captial cities of the states you choose. Let 'B' be the number of states that line crosses (including the two states you choose). What is the maximum value possible for 'B'?

3) Create a list of state names so that every letter of the alphabet (except Q) is included somewhere in the list. Let 'C' be the sum of the lengths of all the state names used. What is the MINIMUM possible value for 'C'?

4) Without looking at a map, try to think of the state which borders the most other states.

Cheers,

Sorry, poorly worded... I'll take either state as a correct answer [grin].

It is difficult to say for certain but Olympia to Tallahassee could pass through 14 states (WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, NE, CO, OK, MO, AR, MS, AL, GA, FL)

Surprisingly I get an equal answer using only two states: MISSISSIPPI, NORTH DAKOTA

(23 including space)... this is the best I've obtained.

I could use just one official state name:

Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations

(45 including the spaces, 39 without.)

Is this a more efficient way of reaching the same tally, or a less efficient way?

Mississippi, North Dakota

for 23 (including the space)

Damn, I wanted to be the one to post that. However, I can at least *correct* the answer to

Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

For which the correct count is 35 letters or 39 total characters.
